Kid-Friendly Adventure at the Georgia Aquarium

My nephew is coming to visit and we need things to entertain a five year old! My mom, sister-in-law, and nephew are coming to visit for a long weekend so I’m planning some kid-friendly activities to entertain everyone.

Here are 3 things to do in/around Atlanta with kids:

  1. Georgia Aquarium
  2. Wild Animal Safari – Pine Mountain
  3. Splatter Dash

In this post, I will focus on the Georgia Aquarium and will highlight the other two options in later posts.

Nestled in the heart of downtown Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium is an immersive experience that in the mesmerizing world of marine life. As one of the largest aquariums in the world, it boasts a diverse collection of aquatic creatures, interactive exhibits, and a commitment to conservation that makes it a must-visit for both locals and tourists alike.

From the moment you step inside, the grandeur of the aquarium is apparent. The main exhibit, Ocean Voyager, features a massive 6.3 million-gallon tank which is home to an array of marine species including whale sharks, manta rays, and schools of vibrant fish. As you stroll through the underwater tunnel, you’ll feel like you’re walking on the ocean floor, surrounded by majestic creatures gliding gracefully around you. (It’s like living a scene straight from one of the Aquaman movies.)

Other notable exhibits include Tropical Diver, where colorful reef fish and unique species like the leafy sea dragon can be found, and Cold Water Quest, which showcases the amazing adaptations of animals living in frigid waters, such as sea otters and beluga whales. Each area is designed to educate visitors about the ecosystems and importance of marine conservation.

What sets the Georgia Aquarium apart is its emphasis on interaction. The Aquanaut Adventure allows kids and adults to engage with the exhibits through hands-on activities that teach about marine habitats and conservation. Additionally, the aquarium offers animal encounters where visitors can get up close and personal with some of its residents, including penguins and stingrays. Some of these interactions come with an additional cost while some are free; it’s best to reserve your time for both ahead of your visit as the timeslots fill up quickly.

The Georgia Aquarium  is involved in various research initiatives and breeding programs aimed at protecting endangered species. By educating the public and providing insights into the challenges faced by our oceans, the aquarium aims to inspire visitors to become advocates for marine conservation.

If you’re planning a trip to the Georgia Aquarium, it’s best to purchase tickets online and in advance to avoid long lines. The aquarium offers a variety of ticket options, including combo tickets that allow access to other attractions in Atlanta (note: some of the other attractions may be less engaging for younger kids). Consider visiting on a weekday to enjoy a more leisurely experience and don’t forget to check the schedule for special events and presentations throughout the day. From feeding sessions to educational talks by marine biologists, these programs provide an enriching experience that enhances your visit.
