Jamaican Birthday Celebrations

The remainder of the week went as planned, lots of reading and relaxing. We managed to spend a week in Jamaica with minimal sun burn (only the top of my feet burnt where my sandals rubbed off the sunscreen) and a couple of gorgeous sunrises to remember our time there. We had private transfer back to the airport which I highly recommend for the comfort and efficiency.

Be aware that all transfers in the Caribbean require you to be at the airport at least 3 hours before your flight is scheduled to depart. This is generally an annoying experience and, in our case, we were at the airport before the check-in counter was even opened. Security in Jamaica is like regular TSA in the US (there is no pre-check option) so it does take a bit longer (remember to wear shoes and socks or you get to walk around the airport barefoot). There is a large Duty Free shopping area and the standard options for food and drinks in the terminal. Since you are likely to be waiting a while, it’s a good idea to have a book or movie downloaded and ready to go.

With plenty of time to distract myself in the airport, I thought back on some of the overall aspects of the trip that I would perhaps reconsider if I were to plan this trip again. First, R gave me a budget to work within and I was successful in that. However, I think it is fair to describe the Marriott Hideaway at Royalton Blue Waters as more of a budget hotel. The rooms were fine, the food was okay, the service was okay … the entire property was okay but there was nothing exceptional or luxurious about it. It was very much a Marriott property that happened to be all-inclusive and while it was fine, it is not a hotel I would return to for a trip like this. When the primary goal of the trip is relaxing and more time is spent in the room, a little luxury is preferred.

The flight back to Atlanta was uneventful and we did score an upgrade to the Comfort+ cabin, though we were seated in different rows. Customs, immigration, and baggage claim went smoothly and we were soon on the shuttle to get our car. Another trip in the books! We had some unexpected hiccups but the trip was enjoyable and we were able to celebrate R’s big birthday. Now it’s time to think about our next adventure together!
